"Your promises have been thoroughly tested; that is why I love them so much" (Psalm 119:140, NLT).
“I don’t feel like celebrating Thanksgiving,” a friend told me. “I have no desire.
I could understand why she felt that way. She’d experienced a year full of loss. But I am an eternal optimist! I believe that no matter how bad life gets, there is always something to be thankful for.
If you’re searching for reasons to be thankful this Thanksgiving, look no farther than your own Bible. There are 3,573 promises that give you a reason to be thankful—regardless of what you and your family might be facing this year. Here are a few of my favorites:
“If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there; if you’re kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath” (Psalm 34:18, Message).
“No need to panic over alarms or surprises, or predictions that doomsday’s just around the corner, because God will be right there with you; he’ll keep you safe and sound” (Proverbs 3:26, Message).
“You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus” (Philippians 4:19, Message).
“ ‘But I, yes I, am the one who takes care of your sins—that’s what I do. I don't keep a list of your sins’ ” (Isaiah 43:25, Message).
“No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it” (1 Corinthians 10:13, Message).
“ ‘I’ve been carrying you on my back from the day you were born, and I’ll keep on carrying you when you're old. I’ll be there, bearing you when you're old and gray. I’ve done it and will keep on doing it, carrying you on my back, saving you’ ” (Isaiah 46:4, Message).
Do you see what I mean? We do have reasons to be thankful! If you or your family has had a tough year, I’m sorry. But I believe that if you will look for the gifts that God has given you—such as His 3,573 promises—you’ll find that there are things to be thankful for, after all.
